Subject: 19902/StadiumCommitment/ACOG/96OlympicGames Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1993 09:55:44 -0500 RESOLUTION NO. 19902 A RESOLUTION TO AUTHORIZE THE MAYOR TO SIGN A LETTER TO BE SENT TO THE ATLANTA COMMITTEE FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES ("ACOG"), DECLARING THE COMMITMENT OF THE CITY OF CHATTANOOGA TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TENNESSEE PRELIMINARY SOCCER COMPETITION OF THE 1996 OLYMPIC GAMES. WHEREAS, the 1996 Olympic Games will be hosted by the ACOG in Atlanta, Georgia, with preliminary events also being hosted in other southeastern communities; and WHEREAS, representatives of Chattanooga and Hamilton County, and other interested parties, have met with ACOG for designation as an Olympic Games host community, it is necessary to commit, along with Hamilton County, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and the State of Tennessee, and the private sector to the construction of a facility adequate for this purpose; this commitment must be made no later than July 14th; and WHEREAS, the ACOG will make a binding decision on or before September 1, 1993; and WHEREAS, this governing body has received and reviewed a proposal to develop a stadium facility ("the Tennessee Bicentennial Stadium" or "TBS") which will meet or exceed ACOG criteria; and 0C WHEREAS, the development of the TBS will create a positive economic impact upon the City, over $6,500,000 of which would be generated during the competition, and in addition thereto, the creation of at least 200 construction and long-term employment opportunities thereafter; and WHEREAS, the development of the TBS will also meet present and long-term community needs beyond the 1996 Olympics; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, That, for the purposes stated above, we do hereby authorize the Mayor to sign a letter to the ACOG, expressing the commitment of the City of Chattanooga government to participate with Hamilton County, Tennessee, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the State of Tennessee, the private sector, and the as yet to be designated Stadium Operating Committee in the development of a stadium facility sufficient for hosting the preliminary events of the 1996 Olympic soccer games, with said total funding for said stadium to be at levels no greater than those reflected in Resolution No. _______, as adopted by this Council on July 13, 1993.
